About Us

Tom and Ann have dedicated 25 years of their professional lives to bringing relational healing and relapse prevention work to individuals and couples in recovery. They are both in recovery from multiple addictions for a combined 61 years. They conducted monthly workshops at the Betty Ford Center for 14 years, where patients consistently evaluated their workshops as ” the peak treatment experience”. They also conducted these workshops throughout the United States and internationally as well as running a private practice in Rancho Mirage, California for 17 years.

As part of this private practice, they each facilitated thousands of continuing care groups combining early, middle and late stage recovering individuals. This incredible ” in the trenches ” experience with alcoholics, addicts and family members at various recovery levels, served as the inspiration for their groundbreaking relational work and the development of their workshops. It became apparent within months that relational issues fuel all relapse and struggles in recovery. Since their groups were multigenerational, it was clearly not just an ” early recovery issue” but consistent throughout many years of recovery.

They trained extensively with leaders in the recovery and relationship fields to bring innovative, effective and healing solutions to struggling couples and individuals. They use Harville Hendrix, Imago work, Sue Johnson’s, Emotionally Focused Therapy work, Peter Levine’s, Somatic Experiencing work ( Ann is a certified Somatic Experiencing Practitioner) Patrick Carnes, Sex addiction work (Tom is a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist), as well as Hal and Sidra Stone’s, Voice Dialogue work. Both Tom and Ann are certified Addiction Counselors, certified Imago Workshop Presenters, certified PAIRS leaders and were consultants at the Betty Ford Center for 17 years. Tom and Ann also use equine therapy, having trained with Gregg Kersten and Chris Bohenik. Yoga is regularly integrated with all work and workshops.

They decided to test their thesis that relational issues need to be addressed early in recovery by following 40 couples for 6 years who attended their couples weekend workshop and 6 follow up couples groups over three months. The results were startling. At the end of 6 years 85% were still sober and 75% were still sober and together. Each person attributed their couple’s work as key to their continued sobriety and quality of life.

Tom and Ann struggled for years to find a way to bring this follow up work to other couples who were geographically diverse. Today they have implemented Skype technology as the all important follow up method. Tom and Ann were initially skeptical, but are now firm believers. Couples love the process. This experience has also demonstrated that if couples are connected and healing, the family unit will be more stable, loving and sober.

2009 brought a major challenge to their lives as it did for many. Tom was diagnosed unexpectedly with throat cancer during a surgery at UCLA. What followed was another step on the recovery journey for each of them and as a couple. Once again they were challenged to live what they teach. Today, Tom is in recovery and remission for two years post surgery and treatment. They are even closer in gratitude for each other and each day. This experience has added to the incredible gifts they have been bringing to couples and individuals for more than 25 years. You can read more about this in “Tom and Ann’s Journey”.

Today they live on a gorgeous Ranch in Corvallis, Montana, where they both have recovered from the medical trauma. They live among friends, mountains, rivers, waterfall, horses and “big sky”. They opened Martin’s Montana Recovery Ranch in January 2011, facilitating workshops and individually designed intensives and sharing the space where they have found so much peace, healing and fun.

The Ranch is 40 miles from Missoula International Airport (MSO). There are two king rooms with private full baths. These are separate and secluded from the rest of the Ranch. They also have two other king bedrooms with a shared bath. When additional space is required, they have been blessed with sponsored access for their clients to stay at ” Stock Farm”, a private club founded by Charles Schwaab. It is an exclusive, beautiful setting of log cabins and farm houses nestled into 2500 acres, approximately 6 miles from the Ranch.
